Why Jesus Not Only Refused to Endorse Religious/Christian Nationalism, But Strongly Opposes It

I am one of the founding members of a group of like-minded pastors and academics called the Faithful Resistance Community Network.

One of our recent projects has been the production of a series of YouTube videos addressing important social issues that will have a bearing on how people vote in the mid-term elections next week.

The most recent video addresses the unbiblical, anti-Christian nature of “Christian Nationalism.” The movement of so-called Christian Nationalism poses a genuine threat to American democracy. But more importantly, it undermines the gospel of Jesus Christ with Jesus’ emphasis upon the arrival of the kingdom of God.

Jesus’ teachings about the kingdom of God and Christian Nationalism are diametrically opposed ideologies. They have as much in common as light and darkness. They mix as well as oil and water.

My friend, Gene Green, is emeritus professor of New Testament at Wheaton

A Christian cross comprised of the American Flag.

College in Wheaton, IL.  Gene and I were enlisted by our group to offer a brief New Testament introduction to the anti-Jesus nature of Christian Nationalism.

Please take a few minutes to listen to Gene and I offer our biblical critique of this dangerous, unbiblical ideology.  Click here to watch.

Episode Two (of Six) Discussing My New Book, The Power of Myth

JDetermineTruth ministries has posted the second livestream where Rob Dalrymple and I discuss the second Jewish/Christian Zionist myth about Israel/Palestine: “The Bible Literally Predicts Israel’s Reestablishment in the Promised Land.”

David Ben-Gurion was modern Israel’s first Prime Minister. He oversaw the Israeli conduct throughout the Zionist-Arab war of 1947-49.

At one point, Ben-Gurion commented that Israel’s war against the Palestinians and the suurrounding Arab states was the best modern commentary on the Old Testament book of Joshua, given Joshua’s penchant for commanding Israel to commit genocide against the local Canaanites.

Similar appeals to a literal Old Testament precedent for Israel’s behavior today appears in the numerous comparisons made by Israeli leaders between the Old Testament Amalekites and the Palestinian residents of  Gaza.

In other words, numerous Israeli leaders have justified their calls for the elimination of all those living in Gaza because God had once told ancient Israel to wipe the Amalekites off the map.

The mildest thing one can say about such readings is that it is Bible-abuse of the highest order. More accurately, such deliberately malicious misreadings weaponize the Old Testament to justifiy modern day genocide. Something no right thinking person–much less any Christian–can possibly approve of, much less applaud.

Part One of a Six Part Series Discussing my New Book, The Power of Myth

My friend, Rob Dalrymple, at DetermineTruth ministries is producing a series of interviews with me where we discuss the six Christian Zionist  myths that I deconstruct in my new book, The Power of Myth: Israeli Propaganda and Christian Zionism.

I plan to provide links to each interview here at HumanityRenewed as soon as they become available.

The first Israeli/Christian Zionist myth we discuss is the claim that modern Israel is the direct descendant of biblical Israel, such that all of God’s Old Testament promises to Abraham and his descendants are now properly applied to the modern state of Israel.

As you can guess, I argue that this is  not true.

Of course, the book covers more information than we can discuss in each brief interview. So, I encourage you to read the book to get the full story!

Also, the book’s introduction discusses the nature of propaganda and its application by the Israeli governement. Something we don’t talk about in this series.

Also, the concluding chapter, titled “Truth, Morality, and the Kingdom of God”, hones in on the Christian, ethical imperatives to reject (Zionist) propaganda. We don’t have a chance to cover this chapter in the series either. However, my main point insists that citizens of the kingdom of God, must insist on truthful narratives–the very opposite of Zionist propaganda–that prioritize Christian commitment God’s justice and mercy in this world.
