What Every Christian Leader Ought to be Saying About America’s Political Situation This 4th of July

Rev. Pat Kahnke hosts a very fine Christian podcast called “Culture, Faith, and Politics.” I highly recommend listening to the analysis that he offers on the current state of American politics and culture more bloadly.

I don’t always agree with everything he says, but what else is new?

He recently featured a campaign speech by Sen. John Ossoff in an African-American church in Georgia. Ossoff roots his speech in the Old Testament prophet Amos. And he unpacks one of the best expositions of Amos and his current relevance to the American situation that I have ever heard.

His exposition is authoritative because it is true to Amos’ language and intentions.

Rev. Kahnke periodically interrupts and provides his own Christian insights to Ossoff’s speech/sermon.

I encourage you to watch the entire video. In fact, I encourage you to watch the video more than once.

I am going to be blunt: the views outlined by Ossoff and Kahnke ought to be the personal and political commitments taught and embodied by every man and woman who claims to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Period. No exceptions.

If you disagree, I urge you to sit with the prophet Amos yourself, study his words, pray that your conscience and actions would come into alignment with the prophet’s injuctions. Be honest with yourself. Are you willing to change? If not, then stop pretending to be a Christian disciple. You are not.

Do you really want to become more like Jesus? On these points Amos and Jesus speak with one voice.
